Synthesis of FER type zeolite with tetrahydrofuran as the template

Abstract: published as an Advance Article on the web 18th September 2000 FER (ferrierite) zeolite was hydrothermally crystallized in a gel system of sodium aluminosilicate with tetrahydrofuran (THF), a nitrogen-free organic compound, as the template; characterization by using TG/DTG/DTA and 13 C MAS NMR shows that THF is incorporated in the pores of the assynthesized FER zeolite.

“…No significant changes are observed between the non-intruded and intruded-extruded samples. In both cases, the micropore volume is quite similar and close to 0.12-0.13 mL/g which is in quite good agreement with the published data [41]. At high relative pressures (p/p° = 0.95) and particularly for the intruded-extruded sample, an increase of the adsorbed volume corresponding to an interparticular porosity is observed.…”

“…The synthesis of FER-type zeolite with Ethylenediamine (En) was performed from a gel with the composition: 19 All syntheses were performed at 180°C in an oven equipped with a tumbling device; the rotation speed was 15 rpm. The oven was charged with autoclaves containing the same initial gel and the synthesis was stopped after different periods to study the crystal growth kinetics.…”

“…Later on a large number of amines were used in the synthesis of FER-type materials, including pyrrolidine [12], tetramethylammonium [13], pyridine [14,15], diethanolamine [16], and trimethylcetylammonium [17]. Nonionic surfactants [18] and tetrahydrofuran [19] were also tried successfully in the synthesis of ferrierite as well as a binary mixture of pyrrolidine and sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate [20]. Tetrahydrofuran and surfactants used in the former syntheses are not real structure directing agents; rather they serve as void fillers or modify the gel chemistry while Na + directs the FER framework formation.…”

“…Ferrierite has also synthesized in presence of sodium bis-(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT), but it requires a longer crystallization period (80 h) (23). Recently Guo et al (24) have synthesized ferrierite with tetrahydrofuran as the template.…”
