Synthesis of Fluorapatite Nanorods and Nanowires by Direct Precipitation from Solution

Abstract: In natural tooth enamel fluoride is always present in the carbonated hydroxyapatite mineral and plays a key role in the prevention of tooth decay. In this study we aimed at mimicking this natural anticaries ability of the tooth by developing new, effective anticaries materials using fluorapatite nanorods or nanowires. We therefore investigated the conditions necessary to synthesize fluorapatite nanorods of different size, shape and composition for future use either directly or indirectly, that is by incorporat… Show more

“…Synthesis of FA crystals under ambient conditions has been described by Chen et al [13]. A JEOL 3011 high-resolution electron microscope (JEOL USA, Peabody, MA, USA) operating at 300 kV was used for normal TEM imaging, highresolution electron microscope (HREM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis.…”

“…In previous work, hydroxyapatite crystals of varying composition (containing varying amounts of fluoride and carbonate) and length (short and long-the long are similar to those seen in human enamel) were synthesized [11][12][13][14]. This was achieved without the aid of cells (ameloblasts), enamel proteins, or polymers.…”

“…This is similar to the case described in a recent report in which ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) has been used as the chelating agent. 45 Figure 3(d-1) shows that the mean diameter of nanoparticles slightly decreases with increasing temperature of the hydrothermal treatment. A comparison of this result with that in the following section reveals that the rod-like nanoparticles with high aspect ratio are synthesized from the precipitation reaction with higher hydrothermal temperature (an increase in mean length of nanorods is observed with increasing temperature during the hydrothermal treatment).…”
