Synthesis of fluorescent carbon nanoparticles grafted with polystyrene and their fluorescent fibers processed by electrospinning

Abstract: Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (f-CNPs) were successfully grafted with polystyrene by employing a "grafting from" method via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). The detailed polymerization kinetic studies showed that the grafting polystyrene polymerization from the f-CNPs surface via RAFT was living-controlled. The synthesized f-CNP-g-PSt nanocomposites with different grating lengths via RAFT could fluoresce like f-CNPs. At the same time, the synthesized f-CNP-g-PSt nanoco… Show more

“…One approach involves the use of the polymer brush to attach photoluminescent moieties. ,,,,,,, Alternatively, polymer brushes can be grafted directly from photoluminescent nanoparticles. , The later approach has been shown to improve the dispersion and near-band-edge emission of nanoparticles . Further, the intrinsic processability of the grafted polymer allows incorporation of fluorescent moieties into functional materials such as polystyrene-grafted fluorescent carbon nanoparticles being electrospun into a fiber mat . The functionality of a polymer brush can also be used to tune the properties of the resultant hybrid.…”

“…1137 Further, the intrinsic processability of the grafted polymer allows incorporation of fluorescent moieties into functional materials such as polystyrene-grafted fluorescent carbon nanoparticles being electrospun into a fiber mat. 1138 The functionality of a polymer brush can also be used to tune the properties of the resultant hybrid. For example, grafting pH responsive brushes to gold nanoparticles allows the plasmonic resonance of the resultant suspension to be changed in response to changes in the pH and nature of the solvent.…”

“…In the following, polymeric materials could stretch and elongate to form fiber structures. The reported luminescent fiber systems were based on the conjugated polymers, [ 88–93 ] luminescent molecules, [ 94–98 ] or nanoparticles/QD, [ 99,100 ] incorporated in nonemissive inert polymers. In this technique, insulating polymeric materials were used as matrix to encapsulate nanostructures or accompany conjugated polymers.…”

“…In recent years, fluorescent nanoparticles with inherent optical imaging have been investigated extensively in the field of cell imaging, medical diagnostics, and therapy. Moreover, they also have been widely introduced into the drug delivery system, because they could preferentially accumulate in diseased tissues and carry detection signal agents or drugs to monitor and treat the diseases.…”
