Synthesis of Gd2O3:Eu nanoplatelets for MRI and fluorescence imaging

Abstract: We synthesized Gd2O3 and Gd2O3 doped by europium (Eu) (2% to 10%) nanoplatelets using the polyol chemical method. The synthesized nanoplatelets were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FESEM, TEM, and EDX techniques. The optical properties of the synthesized nanoplatelets were investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy. We also studied the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast enhancement of T1 relaxivity using 3 T MRI. The XRD for Gd2O3 revealed a cubic crystalline structure. The XRD of Gd2O3:Eu… Show more

“…The crystal spacing of 0.305 nm belongs to the (222) planes of Gd 2 O 3 nanoparticles (Figure 1e,f). The observed result is in good agreement with the reported literature [33]. The presence of the connected nanocrystals has been attained due to the existence of a diverse range of forces (electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces) provided by the presence of external templates of EG coating over Gd 2 O 3 nanoparticles.…”

“…Moreover, these do not have a significant accumulation in the lungs or liver of Female Swiss nude mice. Maalej et al [107] developed Gd 2 O 3 doped by europium (Eu) (2% to 10%) nanoplatelets through the polyol chemical method. Microscopy assays revealed a crystalline cubic structure of the Gd 2 O 3 matrix.…”

“…The former configuration is much more appropriate for dual imaging since it allows direct contact between water molecules and paramagnetic cations as it limits light scattering with the silica matrix. Finally, the third sub-family includes two types: (i) doped single crystals like Er-Tr or Ho doped superparamagnetic iron oxide Fe 3 O 4 NPs [ 190 , 191 ], Eu doped paramagnetic gadolinium oxide Gd 2 O 3 NPs [ 192 , 193 ], or Gd co-doped UCNPs and (ii) crystalline hetero-nanostructures like Fe 3 O 4 @LaF 3 :Ce,Tb [ 194 , 195 ], NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ -Er 3+ @Fe 3 O 4 [ 196 ] or NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ -Er 3+ @NaGdF 4 [ 197 , 198 ] core–shell NPs. Even if both kinds of probes combine high sensitivity of time-resolved fluorescence and high spatial resolution of MRI, there are some reports pointing out the possibility of a host lattice induced optical quenching in the former [ 199 ], making the latter much more studied.…”
