Synthesis of highly stable κ/ι-hybrid carrageenan micro- and nanogels via a sonication-assisted microemulsion route

Abstract: Novel carrageenan micro- and nanogels were developed via a sonication-assisted microemulsion processing route. The diameter of the dry samples ranged 197.3 −421.35 nm whereas the diameter of the samples suspended in water ranged 467.8–605.9 nm. Hybrid κ/ι-carrageenan, rather than κ- or ι-carrageenan was used for the first time for the preparation of micro- and nanogels. KCl was used as a cross-linking agent and Tween 80 was used as surfactant. The micro- and nanogels suspended in water were found to simultaneo… Show more

“…1,2 In such cases, researchers have been led to look for new ways to make different renewable resources, which limits the use of petrochemical resources. 3,4 Currently, many renewable resources are widely used on a larger scale for the development of polymeric materials due to their many benefits over their petroleum counterparts. 5,6 The most preferred natural materials are vegetable oils (VOs), cellulose and bio-fibres for polymer development.…”

“…Today, nanotechnology and medicine have combined to introduce a new stage of cancer therapy by increasing the effectiveness of chemotherapeutics and overcoming clinical challenges. In this study, a niosomal combination therapy of CIS and EPI was proposed to maintain high tumor termination while posing less of a threat to healthy organs. Various surface-modifying compounds (e.g., FA and PEG) were employed to augment the localization of drugs within tumor deposits and increase intracellular drug accumulation through enhanced endocytosis.…”

“…19,29,30 "Polymers from Renewable Resources" is a leading journal that collects and analyses valuable research works in the area of renewable polymer leading to fast paced development in synthesis and applications of sustainable polymers. [31][32][33][34] DDSs are promising platforms for treatment of various diseases such as cancers and genetic disorders. [35][36][37][38] A general overview on development trends for DDSs, over the past two decades indicates that they are getting much more complex in molecular structures to satisfy increasing demands for designing smarter platforms to target specific cells and respond to special kinds of endo-or exogeneous stimuli.…”
