Synthesis of hybrid free and nanoporous silica aerogel-anchored polystyrene chains via in situ atom transfer radical polymerization

Abstract: Polystyrene nanocomposite with mixed free and anchored chains was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. Attachment of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate with a double bond on the nanoporous silica aerogel surface results in a double bond grafted silica aerogel which could be incorporated into the polystyrene chains by a grafting-through process. Conversion and molecular weight evaluation was carried out using gas chromatography and gel permeation chromatography, respectively. Double bond con… Show more

“…In physical methods, adsorption of polymer chains on a substrate is applied by physical bonds. However, in chemical methods, polymer chains are covalently attached to the surface via three common ways of Bgrafting from^, Bgrafting through^, and Bgrafting to^ [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Therein, grafting from is preferable to other methods because of its higher grafting density and thicker polymer layers.…”

“…Moreover, thermal properties of the neat poly (styrene-co-butyl acrylate) and its various nanocomposites are also studied. Preparation of hydrophilic silica aerogel nanoparticles Silica aerogel was prepared by a two-step, acid-base catalyzed, sol-gel polymerization followed by the ambient pressure drying as reported previously [45]. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was used as a precursor to preparation of silica sol.…”

“…Xerogels are obtained by evaporation of solvent in wet gel [17]. In some cases, surface modification is employed for easy removal of solvent molecules [18][19][20]. Thermal characteristics of organic polymer matrices can remarkably be improved by incorporation of inorganic materials.…”
