Synthesis of Ionones by Cyclization of Pseudoionone on Solid Acid Catalysts

Abstract: Ionone synthesis (a, b and c isomers) by pseudoionone cyclization was studied on zeolite HBEA, Amberlyst 35W, SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 , and unsupported and silicasupported heteropolyacids (HPA/SiO 2 ). Ionone formation was preferentially promoted on strong Brønsted acid sites. A 79% ionone yield was obtained on 58.5 wt.% HPA/SiO 2 after 1.5 h of reaction at 383 K and 250 kPa. This value is similar to the best yields reported for the homogeneouslycatalyzed reaction using sulfuric acid.

“…Calcined HTs are highly active and selective, and they can play an important role in many base-catalyzed reactions. Their reactive surface base sites were actively researched and characterized using temperature programmed desorption (TPD), [145,146] FTIR spectroscopy [29,147] and gas-phase microcalorimetry. [141,148] Their basicity is mainly related to the amount and nature of divalent cations present.…”

“…Acid-base sites can be active sites for many reactions including Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reactions, [160,161] cyclo additions of carbon dioxide to epoxides, [162] and aldol condensations to form 2-nonenal. [163] The acid-base properties of Mg-Al mixed oxides are governed by the Mg : Al molar ratio, [29,146,147] calcination temperature [164] and preparation conditions. [29,38,105,145] The mixed oxides derived from thermal treatment of Mg-Al HT are among the solids that have the potential to complement homogeneous catalysts with considerable success since they are inexpensive and non-toxic and their basic properties can be tailored to the process of interest.…”

“…Esta variação do parâmetro de rede a foi atribuído à substituição isomórfica dos cátions Mg + pelos cátions Al +3 na estrutura da hidrotalcita. Em outros trabalhos, Díez et al 39 encontraram as mesmas fases e determinaram que o valor do parâmetro de rede a diminui quando a quantidade de Al no precursor aumenta desde R = 0,10 (a = 3,132 Å) a R = 0,67 (a = 3,020 Å).…”
