“…Cysteine persulfide (CysSSH) and cysteine polysulfides (CysS[S] n H, n > 2) are cysteine derivatives having sulfane sulfur atoms bound to cysteine thiol (Fukuto et al, 2018;Ida et al, 2014;Ono et al, 2014;Sawa et al, 2018). Accumulating evidence has suggested that cysteine persulfides/polysulfides are abundant in prokaryotes and eukaryotes in diverse forms such as monomeric amino acid hydropersulfides/polysulfides (CysSSH, CysS[S] n H), reduced L-glutathione (GSH) hydropersulfides/polysulfides (GS[S] n H), and protein persulfide/polysulfide residues (Akaike et al, 2017;Ida et al, 2014;Kunikata et al, 2017;Numakura et al, 2017;Ono et al, 2017;Peng et al, 2017). Hydropersulfides/polysulfides are highly potent antioxidants and hence protect cells from injury induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) (Ida et al, 2014;Kunikata et al, 2017).…”
