Synthesis of Mesoporous Pt–Ru Alloy Particles with Uniform Sizes by Sophisticated Hard‐Templating Method

Abstract: Team work: Mesoporous Pt-Ru alloy particles with uniform sizes are synthesized by controlled chemical reduction with ascorbic acid using mesoporous silica as a hard template. Elemental mapping shows uniform distribution of Pt and Ru particles. The electrochemical activity and stability of the alloys towards methanol oxidation much higher than that of mesoporous Pt and commercial Pt catalyst.

“…[112][113][114][115] By using SBA-15 and KIT-6 as the hard templates, mesoporous Pt-Ru alloy nanostructures and polyhedral and olive-shaped mesoporous Pt nanocrystals were successfully synthesized, respectively. 116,117 Liu et al utilized porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes to fabricate nanoporous PtCo alloy NWs (Fig. 9), which exhibited enhanced catalytic activity in MOR as compared to currently used Pt/C.…”

“…Compared to other previous methods, such as H 2 reduction, this strategy does not require any complex apparatus, is simple, and is highly reproducible, showcasing its potential for large‐scale production. A variety of compositions, including Pt–Ru, Pt–Co, and Pt–Ni, have also been prepared by using this approach . Control over a well‐defined morphology and a narrow size distribution will become the decisive aspect for the future use of mesoporous metals in a wide range of applications such as electrodes, sensors, catalysts, and drug‐delivery systems.…”

“…The alloys of Pt with various base metals, such as V,28 Cr,29 Co,30 Ti,31 Pb,17d, 32 Hg,33 Cu,34 and Ni,16b and of some noble metals, such as Pd,18a, 35 Ru,19i, 36 Au,37 and Ag,38 have been found to exhibit significantly higher electrocatalytic stabilities and better activities towards the ORR in PEMFCs than Pt alone. Such enhancement can be ascribed to different structural changes that are caused by alloying, such as geometrical factors (decreased PtPt bond length),39 dissolution of the more oxidizable alloying component,40 changes in surface structure,41 or electronic factors (increased Pt d‐band electrochemical vacancy of the Pt skin layer, which originates from the bulk alloy) 28.…”
