Synthesis of monodisperse styrene/methyl methacrylate/acrylic acid latex using surfactant‐free emulsion copolymerization in air

Abstract: Monodisperse styrene/methyl methacrylate/acrylic acid (St/MMA/AA) copolymer microspheres have been prepared with surfactant-free emulsion polymerization in air. The presence of oxygen in the system not only caused an induction period but also decreased the average particle size (D p ). However increasing AA concentration ([AA]) gave a reduction in the induction period. The FTIR and NMR analysis of the latex copolymer confirmed that the correlation of the copolymer compositions with the feed compositions was mu… Show more

“…A competitive effect on the nanospheres formation can be observed, due to the different polarity and functionality of the co-monomers. By varying the co-monomers molar ratio and increasing the functional monomer (AA, DMPA or AM) concentration, the mean diameter of the nanospheres decreases up to molar ratio 8/1, as expected from literature reports [34]. When the functional monomer concentration increases, due to the high polarity of the co-monomers and their water solubility, the nucleation mechanism changes [35] and leads to bigger nanospheres.…”

“…PSAA particles display two tiny peaks at 1740 and 1704 cm -1 which can be ascribed to the stretching vibration of -COOH groups, besides the absorption band of C-H (∼ 3000 cm -1 ) and aromatic C-C (∼ 1494 cm -1 ) of polystyrene [29][30][31]. 1 exhibits FTIR spectra of the prepared PSAA and cTiO 2 particles.…”
