Synthesis of monodispersed silica nanoparticles with high concentration by the Stöber process

Abstract: Silica nanoparticles with high concentration were prepared by the sol-gel process based on the Stöber method using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as a starting material. It was found that silica sol with about 4 wt% in concentration and with a diameter of about 10 nm was obtained by controlling the reaction conditions in the Stöber process. By removing the solvent under a reduced pressure, the particle concentration was increased up to 15 wt% without aggregation.

“…The selected method was derived from the so-called Stöber process widely used for the synthesis of silica beads from a few tens to a few hundreds of nanometers [20][21][22][23]. Here, a series of compositions can be obtained by different silica contents as follows: BaTiO 3 + x wt% SiO 2 (x = 0, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0).…”

“…Stober in his original report (1968) claimed to have achieved completion of particle formation within 15 min only for few instances but his method advocated to perform polymerization for at least 2 h [25]. However, later reports have employed several reaction times but 2 h [26, 27]. Ammonia released by the decomposition of NH 4 OH during the synthesis may also either get entrapped in the material or get adsorbed to the surface of the particle thus interfering with the analysis and further processing [10, 28].…”

“…In order to obtain nanoscaled silica particles, low concentration, sometimes less than 1 wt. %, is usually adopted [21,[25][26][27], leading to a very low yield.…”
