Synthesis of nanosized TiO2/SiO2 catalysts by the ultrasonic microemulsion method and their photocatalytic activity

Abstract: Nanosized TiO 2 /SiO 2 catalysts prepared by hydrolysis of titanium n-butoxide in microemulsion showed enhanced photocatalytic activity. In the presence of catalyst ME-2 and after 90 min irradiation by UV light, methylene blue was completely converted evidenced by the absence of its absorption band in the UV-Vis spectra. This catalyst demonstrated much better degradation ability than P-25 and naked TiO 2 .

“…Moreover, SBA-15 as the support may enhance the stability of the TiO 2 anatase phase and prevent the grain growth of TiO 2 nanocrystals. 57 This mechanism was also supported by our XRD results that 100% anatase TiO 2 was present in Ce-TiO 2 /SBA-15 samples and supported by our UV-vis DRS results that smaller TiO 2 nanoparticles were present due to the SBA-15 confinement effect leading to a blue-shift in light absorption. In addition, mesoporous silica is also a well-known CO 2 adsorbent that may increase the localized concentration of CO 2 near the surface of TiO 2 , and thus improve CO 2 adsorption on TiO 2 and subsequent reduction.…”

“…In a typical preparation procedure, precipitate was obtained by adding a solution of NaHCO 3 into a mixture solution of Fe(NO 3 ) 3 and La(NO 3 ) 3 with Fe/La molar ratio of 1 under stirring until the pH reached 9-11. After precipitation, the precipitate was filtered, washed and then dried at 353 K for 24 h. After that, the sample was grinded and calcined at 1,073 K for 6 h in air.…”

“…TiO 2 powder is currently believed to be the most promising known semiconductor material due to its superior photoreactivity, nontoxicity, and long-term stability. However, its application suffers from drawbacks such as recovery difficulty, easy aggregation and very low efficiency for utilizing solar light [2,3].…”

“…Since the nano materials studied thoroughly by Gleiter research group of Saarland University [3], it has become the research focus of the materials. Lots of the methods of synthesis nano silica are proposed based on different process and theory, and the sol-gel method is one of the most prominent ways [4][5]. A large number of researchers around the word have researched its characteristic, such as the reference prepared the nano silica with small size and uniformity by sol-gel process [6].…”
