Synthesis of new liquid crystals embedded gold nanoparticles for photoswitching properties

Abstract: A new series of liquid crystals decorated gold nanoparticles is synthesized whose molecular architecture has azobenzenes moieties as the peripheral units connected to gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) via alkyl groups. The morphology and mesomorphic properties were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. The thiolated ligand molecules (3a-c) showed enantiotropic smectic A phase,… Show more

“…Since the azobenzene-based LC materials have the potential to be used in optical switching and image storage techniques, ,, we have also observed optical textures after the UV illumination via masked or covered region at 110 °C (isothermally) of the representative compound 2-12 inserted in the planar cell (Figure a–c). The cell was irradiated with UV light (λ = 365 nm, intensity = 10 mW/cm 2 ), and the unmasked region became completely dark/transparent within 6 s, as shown in Figure b.…”

“…3 Moreover, systems such as azobenzene LCs with gold nanoparticles and some U-shaped The Journal of Physical Chemistry B azo-based bent-core LCs have been studied for optical storage devices due to their photoswitching behavior. 44,45 Since the bent-core molecules studied here contain an azo (NN) moiety, they can exhibit photo-induced LC phase transition. With this aim, we have studied the photoresponsive properties of the compounds in their LC state upon UV irradiation (λ = 365 nm, intensity = 10 mW/ cm 2 ), which were in situ-observed by POM (details of UV light are given in the Supporting Information, page S17).…”

“…The conformational change is associated with a change of dipole moment from 0 D for the trans-isomer to 3 D for the cis-isomer [46]. Therefore, the polarity of the surface is reduced and particles tend to precipitate, which also known for other systems [47]. Because of this effect, the absorption of AzoC 2 at 325 nm shows an exponential decay over the time of irradiation in relation to the excitonic bandgap at 524 nm.…”

“…Compound 22 shows a nematic to isotropic transition at 158.9 °C, whereas compound 23 exhibit a smectic A to isotropic transition at exactly 157.6 °C. The number of fluorine substituent present in the compound influence the transition temperature by increasing the number of fluorine atom, the transition temperature will decrease [ 35 ]. Compound 22
