Synthesis of novel acrylic modified water reducible alkyd resin: Investigation of acrylic copolymer ratio effect on film properties and thermal behaviors

Abstract: New four-component water reducible acrylic modified alkyd resins that are based on 1,3-propanediol and contain different ratios of acrylic copolymer (AC) were synthesized by using a novel four-stage fatty acid method. The final content of solids in the water reducible acrylic modified alkyd resins was 60% by weight. After the modified alkyd resin films were cured at 1508C for 1 h, it was observed that the use of AC as the modifier component had improved their physical and chemical surface coating properties an… Show more

“…The formed hybrids were then neutralized by amines prior emulsification in water and used in an air-drying, water-reducible lacquer formulation to make films. Physical and mechanical properties of the films were acceptable.Akgün et al also made acrylic-alkyd hybrids by mixing alkyds and acrylic copolymer 63. The acrylic copolymer was synthesized by free radical copolymerization of MAA and fumaric acid (FA) with (benzoyl peroxide) BPO as radical initiator (Figure 6B).…”

“…The polydispersity index of a polymer can simply describe the distribution width of molecular weight, and the performance of a resin film through the distribution width can be roughly judged. Generally, the smaller the polydispersity index, the narrower the molecular weight distribution, which makes the film excellent in terms of mechanical properties [31]. The alkyd resin synthesized in this experiment has a small molecular weight distribution and a stable number average molecular weight.…”

“…The alkyd resin synthesized in this experiment has a small molecular weight distribution and a stable number average molecular weight. Therefore, an autoxidative cross-linking mechanism of the prepared water-reducible alkyd with the glycolysed PET would bringing better film properties [31,32].…”

“…PDO has also been used as diol component in bio-based waterborne alkyd resins. Acar and co-workers prepared acryl modified water reducible alkyd resins, where besides TMP, PDO was used as sole alcohol component [55]. The solid content of the acrylic modified alkyd resins was 60 weight-%.…”
