A new poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrode that is highly selective to Mn +2 ions was prepared using N,N'-bis(2'-pyridinecarboxamide)-1,2-ethane (bpenH2) as a suitable neutral carrier. This concentration range (1.0 × 10 -5 to 1.0 × 10 -1 M) with Nernstian slope of 29.3 ± 0.5 mV per decade. The detection limit and the response time of electrode were 8.0 × 10 -6 M and (≤ 15 s) respectively. The membrane can be used for more than two months without observing any divergence. The electrodes exhibited excellent selectivity for Mn +2 ion over other mono-, di-and trivalent cations. Selectivity coefficients were determined by the matched potential method (MPM). The electrode can be used in the pH range from 4.0 -9.0. The isothermal coefficient of this electrode amounted to 0.00023 V/ o C. The stability constant (log Ks) of the Mn +2 -bpenH2 complex was determined at 25 o C by potentiometric titration in mixed aqueous solution. The proposed electrode was applied to the determination of Mn +2 ions in real samples.

The reaction of the ligand 1,4-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-butane (L) with RECl 3 afforded complexes of general formula [RE(L) 1.5 Cl 2 (CH 3 OH)]Cl·nS (RE = Pr, Nd, Eu, Tb; n = 4, S = H 2 O; n = 5, S = CH 3 OH). The structural determination reveals that complexes [RE(L) 1.5 Cl 2 (CH 3 OH)]Cl·5CH 3 OH (RE = Nd 2b, Eu 3b) are isomorphous, crystallizing in the monoclinic system, space group P2 1 /n; they possess a 2D architecture with the rare-earth ion in an eight-coordination geometry. By exposure to air, the lattice methanol molecules are easily replaced by water molecules to form the analogues

Room‐temperature aerobic reaction of [Fe(MeCN)4][ClO4]2 with 1,3‐bis(2‐pyridinecarboxamido)propane (H2bpp) yields the tetrairon(III) complex [Fe4(H2bpp)4(μ‐OH)2(μ‐OHO)][ClO4]7·2H2O·xMeCN (1·xMeCN, 0 ≤ x ≤ 3). Crystal structure determination reveals that 1·3MeCN is a new member of the tetrairon(III) family, bridged solely by two hydroxido ligands and a localized {O–H···O}3– bridging unit. The properties of the “tetragonal” core [Fe4(μ‐OH)2{μ‐(O–H···O)}]7+ have been investigated by variable‐temperature magnetic and Mössbauer spectroscopic measurements. Successful modeling of the data has revealed asymmetric iron environments and three types of magnetic exchange interactions [through μ‐OH and μ‐O/μ‐OH of μ‐(O–H···O) bridges]. This tetragonal core is a valuable addition to the tetrairon(III) cluster family from inorganic and bioinorganic perspectives.(© Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)
