Synthesis of permselective membranes by radiation induced grafting of hydrophilic monomers into poly(tetrafluoroethylene) films

Abstract: A large variety of permselective membranes were prepared by radiation grafting techniques. Grafting of styrene into poly‐(tetrafluoroethylene) films followed by sulfonation led to strong anionic membranes showing good performance in reverse osmosis. Carboxylic membranes were prepared by grafting acrylic and methacrylic acids. Cationic membranes were obtained via grafting 4‐vinylpyridine. These membranes were tested in various fractionation processes including reverse osmosis. N‐vinylpyrrolidone grafts exhibite… Show more

“…Radiation-grafted membranes have gained much importance in recent years because of their wide range of applications [1][2][3][4] and ease of synthesis. 5 Fluoropolymers have been mainly used to synthesize these membranes as they are thermally and mechanically stable.…”

“…17 Graft copolymerization of fluoropolymer films by polystyrene with subsequent sulfonation has also been carried out and their structural properties have been investigated. 27 Our approach for the grafting process is to use butyl acrylate (BA) in combination with AMS as the monomer system. The radiation grafting of PEEK films has been investigated recently in such a way that the copolymers with desired functionality are developed.…”
