“…Although reversible swelling and on-off switching behavior have been reported for hydrogels in different pH environments, the contribution of the results presented with the ionic-strength change to the studies in this field is important. Oh and coworkers 38 prepared PNIPA crosslinked with a divinylazonaphthol monomer via radical emulsion polymerization and investigated the fluorescence intensity by changing the temperature between 30 and 50 1C repeatedly. When reversible changes in temperature were repeated six times, the fluorescence increased upon heating and PNIPA exhibited a noticeable size change with sol-gel transition.…”

“…To this, about 4.2 g (26.5 mmol) of GMA was added and the reaction solution was purged with nitrogen gas for 30 min. Further, approximately 0.1 g AIBN was added to initiate the reaction and the reaction flask was magnetically stirred under inert conditions at 65 • C for 24 h [46]. The resulting viscous mass was precipitated in a beaker containing 250 mL hexane and the precipitation process was repeated 3 times to eliminate the unreacted monomer molecules.…”

“…Besides generating new properties or enhancing the properties of molecules, aggregation can also cause the total reverse of the molecular properties, resulting in a property transformation from −1 → +1. For example, poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) is a well-studied temperature-sensitive polymer with broad applications . One of the most important characteristics of PNIPAM is the temperature-resulting phase transition.…”

The temperature-induced phase transition actually represents a kind of aggregation-induced transformation from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity.…”
