Synthesis of Poly(vinyl acetate) Nanogels by Xanthate‐Mediated Radical Crosslinking Copolymerization

Abstract: Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) nanogels are synthesized by a radical crosslinking copolymerization (RCC) in solution of vinyl acetate and divinyl adipate (DVA) or 2,4,6‐tris(allyloxy)‐1,3,5‐triazine (TAT) as the crosslinker, in the presence of a xanthate as a reversible chain transfer agent. Higher concentrations of crosslinker and lower concentrations of xanthate produce PVAc nanogels of higher molar masses, for a given concentration of xanthate and for a fixed concentration of crosslinker, respectively. The xant… Show more

“…The design of branched PVAc by RAFT has also allowed the synthesis of nanogels by controlled radical crosslinking copolymerization (CRCC) [180]. VAc was copolymerized with divinyl adipate as crosslinker with similar structure.…”

“…This strategy, coined 'Strathclyde synthesis' 14 , was then enriched, thanks to living/ controlled radical polymerization mechanisms. The so-called controlled radical crosslinking copolymerization methodology has enabled the synthesis of various branched polymers with very well-defined primary chain lengths [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] . However, only low proportions of MVM could be used to avoid gelation, which limits the formed polymers to a low branching degree.…”
