Synthesis of Potassium Silicate Nanoparticles from Rice Straw Ash Using a Flame-assisted Spray-pyrolysis Method

Abstract: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to synthesize potassium silicate nanoparticles from rice straw ash using a flame-assisted spray-pyrolysis method. Rice straw, as one of the agricultural wastes, was used as a source of silica. In the experimental procedure, rice straw was burned at 700°C for 3 hours to produce rice straw ash. Then, the rice straw ash was extracted using an alkaline method. We used potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an alkaline chemical agent as well as a source of potassium. The solution was t… Show more

“…Among the multi‐peaks, the spectral peaks at the position of ca. 1630/810/790 cm −1 and 3430 cm −1 can be related to the symmetric stretching and out of plane bending vibrations of Si−O−Si, −OH, respectively [20] . Thus, all samples contain the Si−O−Si and −OH groups.…”

“…The green approach to synthesizing silica from agricultural wastes has been crucial since it is cheaper, safer, and environmentally friendly than commercialized silica (Nandiyanto et al, 2017). The high purity of bio-based silica has been proven equivalent to commercialized silica, leaving its potential in multiapplications.…”

“…The high percentage composition of K2O proved that OPDC is a nutrient-rich source of fertilizer, bio-compost, and animal feedstock. The presence of this element is an essential micro-nutrient for the agricultural sector because it helps to increase productivity, increase plant quality in terms of taste, shape, and color, and also enhances the defense mechanism in plants against adverse impacts of pests and the environment (Nandiyanto et al, 2017;Samantray et al, 2020).…”

“…Lignocellulosic biomass is considered as future sustainable feedstock for chemicals (Permatasari et al, 2016). It consists of three major components, namely cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin Nandiyanto et al, 2017). Due to their complicated structures, the biomass must be pretreated before undergo further processing.…”

“…The main goal of biomass pretreatment in biofuel plants is to prepare the cellulose fraction of the biomass for subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis and yeast fermentation processes (Farobie & Hasanah, 2016;Bilad, 2016). The hemicellulose fraction is also sometimes used depending on the technology provider of those subsequent processes (Nandiyanto et al, 2017). Hence, it is basically to make access, provide large surface area, and prepare cellulose and hemicellulose for the enzymes and the yeasts.…”
