The PPy/TiO 2 composites were synthesized by polymerizing pyrrole monomer on the surface of TiO 2 calcined at different temperatures. The results of Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Temperature programmed desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Zeta potential showed that the type and amount of the active groups on TiO 2 surface decreased with the increase of calcination temperature, leading to a significant decline in its adsorption capacity for Acid Red G (ARG) and Methylene Blue (MB). This also had a significant influence on the physicochemical property and adsorption performance of PPy/TiO 2 . The prepared PPy/TiO 2 composite exhibited an enhanced adsorption capacity for ARG and MB. The adsorption ability of PPy/TiO 2 was the strongest when TiO 2 was not calcined and gradually decreased with the increase of the calcination temperature of TiO 2 . The PPy/TiO 2 composite without calcination was chosen to investigate its adsorption performance. The results showed that the adsorption behaviors of ARG and MB on PPy/TiO 2 were described by the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models with the maximum adsorption amount of 424.75 and 439.61 mg/g for ARG and MB, respectively. Finally, the surface chemical properties of TiO 2 seriously affected the adsorption performance of PPy/TiO 2 . The PPy/TiO 2 composite could possess excellent adsorption performance when the selected TiO 2 contained more hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. Graphical abstract

The main focused of this research work is the preparation of conductive polymers like polypyrrole, polyaniline and polythiophene and their application as adsorbent materials for the removal of hyper toxic metal As (III) from aqueous solution. The metal ions get attached on the π-electrons at the back bone of polymer that illustrate excellent affinity for metal ions. The adsorption of As (II) ions was carried out on polythiophene due to its redox properties and the stronger interaction between sulfur atoms with arsenic atoms. To attain large surface area and for maximum interaction of As (III) ions with polymers, the particle size of polymers was ranged in nano scale. As the surface area increases with decrease in particle size, the active sites for metal ions also increases. These polymers were characterized by FIIR spectroscopy and SEM analysis. Adsorption isothermal data was examined by two parameters (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich) and three parameters Redlich-Petrson, Sips and Toth models. Experimental results showed that based on standard deviation (SD) and Chi square test (χ 2 ) the experimental data was best explained by Freundlich and Toth isotherm. Thermodynamics parameters such as free energy change (ΔG 0 ), enthalpy change (ΔH 0 ) and entropy change (ΔS 0 ) have been calculated respectively, which revealed the spontaneous, endothermic and feasible nature of adsorption process.
