Synthesis of Pseudo-geminal-, Pseudo-ortho-, andortho-Phosphinyl-oxazolinyl-[2.2]paracyclophanes for Use as Ligands in Asymmetric Catalysis

Abstract: Syntheses of three regioisomers of aromatic-substituted oxazolinyl-phosphinyl-[2.2]paracyclophanes, pseudo-geminal, pseudo-ortho and ortho, have been carried out or, in the latter two cases, newly developed. It has therefore been demonstrated that all aromatic-substituted isomers relevant for use as chelating ligands for asymmetric catalysis are accessible. These P,N-ligands, along with their diastereoisomers, were shown to exhibit widely differing activity and enantioselectivity (up to 89% ee) in the Pd-ca… Show more

“…So far, planar-chiral [2.2]paracyclophanes have been predominately recognized as suitable scaffolds for phosphane [11] and heterocyclic carbene ligands. [12] Only lately have their applications as organocatalysts been reported.…”

“…The general P,P ‐ligand framework has been thoroughly studied, and extensively modified and combined with other transition‐metals for many other asymmetric catalytic transformations . Furthermore, mixed P,N ‐ligands such as oxazoline 3 or pyridine 4 as well as N , N ‐ligands such as bisoxazoline 5 have been synthesized. However, the synthesis of many of these ligands requires the introduction of space moieties that significantly alter the bite‐angle and mode of coordination.…”

“…An example of the synthesis of the phosphino-oxazolines containing both planar and central elements of chirality, but not derived from ferrocene, was reported by Bolm and co-workers [43]. The oxazoline ring was built in several steps as a side arm of the racemic [2,2]paracyclophane-derived carboxylic acid 24 and the unsubstituted [2,2]paracyclophane 27 (Scheme 10, parts A and B).…”
