“…A weighed fraction of the obtained RHA was refluxed with 0.5 M NaOH at 90 °C for 2 h to extract sodium silicate solution as an original material for fabricating mesoporous silica (SBA-16), as reported in ref. 51, and the remaining black carbon (RHC) was used as a silica-free carbonaceous precursor to prepare the activated carbon. For this purpose, a portion of RHC was washed with deionized water to neutral pH and dried at 100 °C for 24 h. RHC was mixed with KOH pellets in a Pyrex dish using a small amount of H 2 O with a mass ratio of 1 : 3 RHC to KOH and dried in an air-oven at 120 °C for 4 h.
