Synthesis of single component element‐block materials based on siloxane‐based cage frameworks

Abstract: This mini-review focuses on recent efforts to prepare single component element-block materials based on siloxane-based cage frameworks, a promising approach to control the sequence of organic and inorganic segments in organic-inorganic hybrids at the molecular level. Polyhedral octasilsesquioxanes, denoted (RSiO 1.5 ) 8 or labeled T 8 cages, and octadimethylsiloxy-Q 8 cages, denoted (RSiMe 2 OSiO 1.5 ) 8 , are used here as siloxane-based cage frameworks. Thermoplastic optically transparent silsesquioxane mater… Show more

“…Unique structure andp roperties make POSS popular in many areas of applications, primarily in the synthesis of advanced, well-defined, highly functionalized, hybrid materials. [1] Among various types of POSS, one of the most widespread is the cubic-octameric framework, with as ingler eactive group and seven inert ones (R'R 7 Si 9 O 12 ). Such systems have been obtained via condensation of trisilanols (R 7 Si 7 O 9 (OH) 3 )w ith functionalized silanes (e.g.…”

“…Thus, we decidedt oe xamine the hydrosilylation of aw ide range of functional alkenes with silsesquioxane (HSi-Me 2 O)(iBu) 7 Si 8 O 12 (1), control the processes with the 1 H, 13 C, 29 Si NMR and in situ FTIR, and determine the influence of the type of catalyst, reactiont emperature and time on the effectiveness of the process. The final objective was to fully characterize the obtainedp ost-reaction mixtures and isolated products.…”

“…Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) are unique 3D nanobuilding blocks with a well‐defined cage‐like structure which consists of silicon and oxygen atoms linked together in a cubic structure [33,34]. POSS can be used as precursors to enhance the mechanical and thermal stability of the resulting POSS‐containing nanohybrid polymers for the unique cage‐like structures and nanoscale dimensions [35].…”

“…To control the properties of such materials, fillers are often utilized: for example, thermal stability, mechanical properties, refractive index (RI), hydrophobicity, and advanced functions. [1][2][3][4] Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] has attracted much attention as a nanofiller [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] because it has not only high transparency and thermal stability due to the inorganic core but also fine designability and good solubility due to the organic substituents. Films of polymer-POSS composites can be easily fabricated, and various properties are improved and/or tuned.…”
