Synthesis of stable high hydroxyl content self‐emulsifying waterborne polyacrylate emulsion

Abstract: The stability of hydroxyl polyacrylate emulsion was studied from two aspects of the structure of latex particles and polymerization conditions. Waterborne polyacrylate was prepared through seeded semicontinuous emulsion polymerization method with pre-emulsification process. HEMA was used to provide a high content of hydroxyl group, and the reactive emulsifier SE-10 was introduced to substitute for the traditional emulsifier. The best conditions including polymerization process and temperature, monomer types an… Show more

“…Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has attracted considerable attention as a promising environmentally friendly polymer, with excellent processability, low volatile organic compounds, and other superior properties . However, the use of WPU in coatings, leathers, textiles, membranes, and adhesives is greatly limited because of its intrinsic flammability . So, there is a strong need to improve the poor flame retardancy of WPU to increase its application.…”

“…Methyl methacrylate homopolymer has a T g of about 105 °C, and the butyl acrylate homopolymer has a T g of about −57 °C, while the difference in glass transition temperature decreases because of the binary copolymerization. The former's T g decreases to 40 °C, and the latter's T g rises to −26 °C, it means that PMMA‐ co ‐PBA has a significant phase separation, that is, the methyl methacrylate polymer component corresponds to the hard segment phase and the butyl acrylate polymer component corresponds to the soft segment phase.…”

“…However, in the process of emulsion film formation, small molecule emulsifiers easily desorb from polymer particles and migrate to the surface of the coating, a weak boundary layer is produced at the bonding site, resulting in shrinkage of the film, affecting the water resistance and adhesion of the coating. Moreover, commonly used emulsifiers contain sulfonic acid groups, which remain in the film and are corrosive to the metal substrate, the dosage of emulsifier should be reduced as much as possible .
