Synthesis of Strong Ground Motions at Two Rock Stations during the Great Wenchuan Earthquake from a Hybrid Source Model

Abstract: In order to study the characteristics of ground motions at the two dam sites damaged during the great Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, the motions at two observation stations nearby are synthesized in this paper. 30 finite fault based hybrid source models of the great Wenchuan earthquake with magnitude 8.0 is built. The global and local parameters are both generated from the truncated Normal distribution with mean and standard deviation values estimated by a set of semi-experiential calibration laws and from the r… Show more

“…In general, 30 source models are used in synthesis to take into account the uncertainty of these parameters, and the mean spectrum is adopted for seismic analysis. A source model was chosen from 30 models by means of the corresponding spectrum mostly close to the average one [8], and it is used in this paper. The rupture process is simulated as the time sequence of ruptures of all sub sources which starts from the initial point (the hypocenter), and propagates with a given velocity to the others.…”

“…Some seismologists believe those of large earthquakes are generally stable, while those of small to moderate quakes are different. The source spectrum is adopted for the source mechanism in stochastic synthesis of high frequency ground motion [8]. The value of the stress drop must influence the synthesized motion.…”

“…Two rock sites are selected for the synthesis, where ground motions were recorded during the great Wenchuan earthquake, with the same regional data set as in [8]. The mean response spectrum and mean peak acceleration are calculated from those of each synthesis by the 30 source models.…”
