Synthesis of Sustainable Circular Economy in Palm Oil Industry Using Graph-Theoretic Method

Abstract: Huge generation of oil palm biomass has stimulated the development of biorefineries for synthesis of bioproducts. By targeting the palm oil industry and the biorefineries as the consumers of these products, a sustainable circular economy can be created by recycling the biomass wastes to the said consumers. To evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of the sustainable circular economy, a mathematical model demonstrating the biomass network with consideration of recycling is developed in this work. Besides, Pro… Show more

“…Conversion technologies, on the other hand, have been created and commercialized in order to better convert waste into a more usable product. While biorefineries may be able to convert these wastes into biofuel and other biochemicals, the oil palm industry may require fertilizer, steam, fuel, and electricity for their plantation and manufacturing facilities [58].…”

“…For example, a content analysis for 132 studies [62] concludes that: (1) there is a positive relationship between corporate sustainability and financial performance in 78% of the cases, and (2) different methodologies and measurement of variables may lead to different results. Some studies claim that CE practices can induce profitability (e.g., [11,12,[63][64][65]), while another study opposes that the linear production model induces higher rates of profitability [66]. A third line of studies, despite recognizing that the linear production model returns greater profits, present evidence that implementing CE practices may increase corporate profitability [67,68].…”

“…Palm oil is the major product from the oil palm industry and since the mid-2000s, it has displaced soybean oil as the most important edible oil in the world [82]. Worldwide palm oil production has reached over 69 million metric tons (MMT) in 2017 with Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand as the major producers [83].…”
