Synthesis of Ti3AlC2 Powders Using Sn as an Additive

Abstract: Nearly pure Ti 3 AlC 2 powders have been synthesized by calcining a mixture of titanium, aluminum, and graphite powders using tin powders as additives. Four recipes with different mole ratios of Ti:Al:C:Sn were examined at calcining temperatures from 13001 to 15001C. The addition of Sn effectively inhibited the generation of thermal explosion when the volume of the starting materials is larger, and considerably reduced the lowerlimit calcining temperature. The nearly pure Ti 3 AlC 2 powders can be obtained rel… Show more

“…Up until now, the mechanical properties of Ti 3 ͑Al, Sn͒C 2 solid solutions have not been investigated although the synthesis of this compound has been reported in several papers. 12,30,31 Based on the bulk modulus of Ti 3 ͑Al, Sn 0.2 ͒C 2 ͑226 GPa͒, the addition of Sn seems to increase the mechanical properties of Ti 3 AlC 2 . Further investigations about the mechanical properties of Ti 3 ͑Al, Sn͒C 2 solid solutions are necessary to confirm this effect.…”

“…A suitable amount of Al was added to compensate for the Al loss due to high-temperature evaporation [28]. An appropriate amount of Sn with a molar ratio of 0.1 was also added to improve the wetting effect in the early stage of the reaction process [29,30]. In order to ensure even blending, planetary ball milling using agate milling spheres was performed at 200 rpm in an argon atmosphere for 12 h. The diameters of the agate milling spheres were 18 mm, 10 mm, and 2.5 mm with a weight ratio of 1:1:1.…”

“…[36,58,59] Addition of additives is an efficient way to improve the purity of MAX phases. [61] Mingxing et al [62] prepared nearly pure Ti 3 AlC 2 by adding Sn as additive. Sn has two roles: first, its low melting point (231.8 C) enables it to form an early liquid phase that helps starting materials to react beforehand; second, Sn could impede Al evaporation and extend the range of synthesis temperature.…”
