Synthesis of TiO2 via modified sol-gel method and its use in carbonized medium-density fiberboard for toluene decomposition

Abstract: A solution-type TiO2-based photocatalyst for the decomposition of volatile organic compounds was synthesized using a modified sol-gel method under either alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol) or aqueous conditions. Anatase-type TiO2 was successfully synthesized with additional hydrothermal treatment using either type of medium. However, the aqueous condition for TiO2 synthesis was more convenient for the formation of anatase-type TiO2. Based on X-ray diffraction analysis data, the optimal hydrothermal treatment tem… Show more

“…TiO 2 was prepared by a hydrothermal technique using TTIP as a titanium precursor. This method allows one to synthesize anatase or anatase/rutile mixed TiO 2 particles at relatively mild condition [ 50 , 51 ]. The coexistence of the anatase/rutile phase reduces the band gap that enhances the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 in the range of visible light [ 52 , 53 ].…”

“…TiO 2 has proved to be an effective material for the degradation of VOCs due to its strong oxidation properties, high stability, and cost effectiveness [5]. Lee et al also prepared two different types of TiO 2 -cMDFs for the removal of aromatic VOCs, especially toluene: (1) one-step preparation of TiO 2 -cMDF through in situ formation from a titanium tetraisopropoxide precursor on the surface of MDF via carbonization [6] and (2) synthesis of TiO 2 by sol-gel method and then application to the surface of cMDF [7]. These TiO 2 -cMDFs exhibited outstanding removal performance for formaldehyde, one of the major VOCs that cause sick house syndrome, and toluene, a hardly degradable aromatic VOC, through adsorption and photodegradation under UV irradiation [6,7].…”

However, the efficiency of the TiO 2 /UV processes are limited by their fast recombination of electron-hole pairs and wide band gap, which restricts light absorption to the ultraviolet region [8].…”
