Synthesis of zeolite-A using kaolin samples from Darazo, Bauchi state and Ajebo, Ogun state in Nigeria

Abstract: Kaolin samples from Ajebo and Darazo in Nigeria were characterized and used to produce zeolite-A crystals. The thermal analysis indicates that both samples undergo de-hydroxylation from 450 o C to about 700 o C and are converted to metakaolin with a weight loss of about 11.39 and 10.43% for the Ajebo and Darazo samples respectively. Characteristic OH, Al-OH, Si-OH and Si-O-Al bands were confirmed in both samples with Infra-red spectroscopy studies. The X-ray diffraction patterns clearly show the presence of th… Show more

“…Zeolites are made up of an aluminosilicate framework's basic structure, which consists of four oxygen anions (O 2-) surrounding a tetrahedral arrangement of silicon (Si 4+ ) and aluminum (Al 3+ ) ions [21]. Si-O and Al-O bonds contain oxygen ions connected to two cations shared by two tetrahedron structures [22]. As a result, SiO4/2 is tetravalent electroneutral, and AlO4/2 is trivalently negatively charged [23].…”

“…As a porous material, zeolite 4A has various uses, including water purification and toxic heavy metals removal (Rahman et al, 2018;Wu et al, 2018;Al-Jubouri et al, 2019), adsorbent (Wang et al, 2019) , catalysts, ion exchange membranes, and molecular sieve (Ginting et al, 2019) . The source of silica in the synthesis of zeolite 4A can come from kaolin (Du and Yang, 2010;Li et al, 2010;Omisanya et al, 2012;H Kareem et al, 2014;Golbad et al, 2017;Garcia Mendoza, 2017;Du and Yang, 2010;Rahman et al, 2018;Mgbemere et al, 2019;Wang et al, 2019;Dahani et al, 2020;Sowunmi et al, 2022) sugar cane bagasse, rice husks, coal bottom ash (CBA), coal fly ash (CFA), natural zeolite (Ginting et al, 2019) , basalt rock (Hwang et al, 2018) , opal waste rock (Wu et al, 2018) , bauxite (Rahman et al, 2021) , from chemicals (Menad et al, 2016;Paprica et al, 2022) and waste sludge from water treatment plants (Wongwichien et al, 2014) . In this research, the silica extracted from BBS was used as raw material for making zeolite 4A.…”

“…Some of these chemicals include sodium aluminate, aqueous tetramethylammonium hydroxide, aluminium isopropoxide, silica gel, etc. [2] The challenge with using commercial raw materials or precursors to produce zeolite is in the high cost involved [6,7]. In most countries, there exist some materials found in nature as industrial wastes that contain alumina and silica in proportions that can and have been used to produce zeolites.…”
