Synthesis of zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) spinel and its application as photocatalyst

Abstract: ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel was synthesized by co-precipitation using ammonia as precipitating agent, followed by thermal treatment at 750 °C. The structural properties of particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET) techniques. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated in the degradation of organic pollutant in aqueous solution under sunlight. The results showed that the ZnAl 2 O 4 particles exhi… Show more

“…Semiconductor-based photocatalysts have attracted considerable attention due to their potentially promising avenue for solving current environment and energy problems, by using the abundant solar light 1 . Of the well-known photocatalysts, titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) has undoubtedly proven to be the most promising material, due to its low toxicity, earth abundance, chemical and thermal stability, and resistance to photocorrosion 2 .…”

“…Therefore, it is currently being used as high temperature material, sensors, eletronic and optical materials, as well as catalysts and catalyst support [4][5][6][7][8] . In general, many methods of synthesis have been used for the preparation of ZnAl 2 O 4 oxide, which include co-precipitation [9][10] , modifed citrate sol-gel 11 , microwave combustion 3,12 , hydrothermal [13][14] , sol-gel 15 , polymeric precursor 16 and solid state route 17 . Among the several preparation methods, microwave assisted combustion synthesis is one of the most effective, fast, simple and energy efficiency method for the synthesis of metal oxide based materials, producing high purity and chemically homogeneous powders 3,6 .…”

“…Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are alternative emerging techniques for the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater [1][2][3][4][5][6] . AOPs are divided in a variety of methods, and among them, heterogeneous Fenton reaction is one of the most interests, which to use iron-based solid catalyst, whose major advantage is its easy recovery from the solution by a field magnetic for further reutilization [7][8][9] .…”
