The photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants is an effective method of controlling environmental pollution. ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were prepared by the solvothermal method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS). The results showed that the ZnO NPs had a uniform size of 25–40 nm, hexagonal wurtzite structure, and a band gap of 2.99 eV. The photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) was used as a model reaction to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of ZnO NPs. The photocatalytic degradation rates (pseudo-first-order kinetics) of MO and PNP were 92% (0.0128 min−1) and 56.2% (0.0042 min−1), respectively, with a 25 W ultraviolet lamp, MO/PNP concentration = 20 mg/L, ZnO NPs dose = 1.5 g/L, and time = 180 min. The photocatalytic mechanism of ZnO NPs and degradation pathways of MO and PNP were also proposed. The results provide valuable information and guidance for the treatment of wastewater via photocatalytic methods.

Facile Synthesis of ZnO-CeO2 Heterojunction by Mixture Design and Its Application in Triclosan Degradation: Effect of Urea

In this study, simplex centroid mixture design was employed to determine the effect of urea on ZnO-CeO. The heterojunction materials were synthesized using a solid-state combustion method, and the physicochemical properties were evaluated using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Photocatalytic activity was determined by a triclosan degradation reaction under UV irradiation. According to the results, the crystal size of zinc oxide decreases in the presence of urea, whereas a reverse effect was observed for cerium oxide. A similar trend was observed for ternary samples, i.e., the higher the proportion of urea, the larger the crystallite cerium size. In brief, urea facilitated the co-existence of crystallites of CeO and ZnO. On the other hand, UV spectra indicate that urea shifts the absorption edge to a longer wavelength. Studies of the photocatalytic activity of TCS degradation show that the increase in the proportion of urea favorably influenced the percentage of mineralization.

We developed an improved hexagonal wurtzite ZnO and ZnO/C microflowers through the facile hydrothermal technique. The obtained nanostructures were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS). The formation of flower-like material is confirmed using SEM and TEM analysis with an average diameter of about 2 lm composed of several plate-like nanostructures. The optical analysis results show that the presence of carbon particles with ZnO structures has significantly increased the light absorption ability of nanocomposite. The photocatalytic degradation ability of prepared nanostructures was examined using methylene blue as a model pollutant. The obtained results show that the photocatalytic degradation ability of ZnO/C nanostructures is approximately two times higher than the pristine ZnO microflowers. Based on the investigation, an enhancement of the photocatalytic ability of ZnO/C nanocomposite is achieved due to the synergistic effect between carbon particles and flower-like ZnO nanostructures.
