Synthesis of β-sialon/Ti(C, N) powders from mineral waste residue via carbothermal reduction nitridation

Abstract: β-Sialon/Ti(C, N) composite powders were synthesized via carbothermal reduction nitridation method with low-grade bauxite and ilmenite as starting materials and coke as the reducing agent.

“…On the other hand, this application is simpler than blast furnace iron-making, and requires lower energy consumption. [10][11][12][13] Our research group previously reported the preparation and properties of an iron-based friction material by in situ reaction and sintering in a vacuum from vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite concentrate. 14 The prepared iron-based friction material can merely meet the basic requirement of JBT 3063-1996 but the performance is poor.…”

“…Sialon (Silicon Aluminum Oxynitride ) as a class of new materials were first found by Japan and British's scientists in the early1970s when they were in the study on the various additives for Si 3 N 4 and it was solid solution forming by the Al, O atoms in Al 2 O 3 partly replacement by Si, N in Si 3 N 4 . Sialon crystals have variety of structures [1], and β-Sialon was regarded as one of the most hope high temperature resistant materials which has diverse applications in industry [2] due to its superior thermal properties and chemical stability, moreover, these materials usually use in the large and medium-sized blast furnace [3] as the interior materials making an important contribution to extend the service life of blast furnace. Ti(C, N) as one kind of oxide materials, is one of the hotspots focusing in the field of materials in recent years [4,5,6,7], which is the solid solution of TiN and TiC [8,9,10].…”

“…Moreover, the high-grade ores gradually decrease with extensive exploitation and utilization, which caused middle-and low-grade ores and bauxite tailings account for more than 70% of total reserves stored in the tailing dam. 1)3) Furthermore, an estimated 2.7 billion tons of bauxite tailings are stacked in residue disposal areas in the world and the number is increased by approximately 120 million tons per year. 4),5) It is known to us all that bauxite is exhausted and valuable non-renewable resources.…”
