In the present study, a polyvinyl chloride-based barium tungstate ion-exchange membrane was synthesized by sol–gel method. The structure of membrane was studied in terms of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms crystalline form of the composite membrane without any other impurity. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis show the uniform arrangement of particles in the membrane with crack-free surface structure and presence of different functional groups of the organic-inorganic materials. The electrochemical properties like surface charge density ( D), transport number and mobility ratio of the ion-exchange composite membrane were theoretically evaluated and compared with observed values using “Teorell, Meyers and Sievers” method. Transport number follows the order as KCl <NaCl < LiCl < NH4Cl, while the surface charge density showed reversed order. The results showed that the low concentration of electrolytes favors the high mobility of univalent cation in the present study. The above result proves the analytical utility of polyvinyl chloride-based barium tungstate ion-exchange membrane in environmental management.

The chemical and mechanical stability of membrane play a important role for understanding the mechanism and applications of cobalt tungstate cation exchange membrane. The PVC based cobalt tungstate (CT) membrane has been prepared by different methods like sol-gel, die-casting and others material processing techniques. It has been prepared through the mixing of PVC with cobalt tungstate into a definite ratio (1:3) that shows good mechanical stability. Moreover, the paper is concerned with physico-chemical and electro-chemical characterization of membrane, namely fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical studies. The results of characterization and electrochemical studies offered the potential industrial applications of membrane in different areas.

Single‐walled carbon nanotubes cerium(IV) phosphate composite cation exchanger was synthesized using sol−gel method. The ion‐exchange properties such as elution concentration, elution behavior and effect of temperature on ion exchange capacity were studied. The composite cation exchange material showed an ion‐exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.64 meq dry g−1 of ion exchanger. The distribution studies revealed that the composite cation‐exchanger is highly selective for Cd(II) ions. The material was used as an electroactive component for the construction of a cadmium ion‐selective membrane electrode. The membrane electrode showed a Nernstian response for Cd(II) ions over a wide concentration range of 1 × 10−7−1 × 10−1 M with a sub‐Nernstian slope of 27.429 mV per decade change in concentration of cadmium ions. The limit of detection was found to be 1 × 10−7 M. It possessed a fast response time 10 s and can be utilized for 130 days without any considerable divergence in response potential. The practical utility of membrane electrode was demonstrated by employing as an indicator electrode for the potentiometric titration of Cd(II) with ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid, disodium salt (EDTA).
