Synthesis, Solid-State Structures, and Computational Studies of Half-Sandwich Cp*BeX (X = Cl, Br, I) Compounds

Abstract: The solid-state structures of half-sandwich beryllium complexes Cp*BeX (X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3)) are described. All attempts to synthesize Cp*BeF (4) by reaction of 1−3 with several fluorinating reagents such as AgF 2 , XeF 2 , 4-FC 6 H 4 IF 2 , AgF, NaF, and Me 4 NF failed. However, the reaction of 3 and AgF in resulted in the unexpected synthesis of the known beryllocene Cp* 2 Be (5). Quantum-chemical calculations were performed to investigate the electronic structures of 1−4.

“…In this study, the synthesis of Cp*BeF was attempted through halide substitution. However, these experiments did not yield the desired product and only decomposition with varying exothermicity was observed . The serendipitous synthesis of a Cp*BeF derivative was however achieved when the synthesis of a [Cp*Be] + ion was attempted through the introduction of a weakly coordinating anion.…”

“…A single crystal X‐ray analysis of the crystals revealed the sample to be the mono(indenyl) species [Be(1,3‐TMS 2 Ind)Br] ( 2 ) (Figure 3). The compound is monomeric, and unlike related [BeCp*X] species, [22] does not display obvious intermolecular interactions in the solid state. The Be atom is bonded in an η 5 ‐manner to the 5‐membered ring of the indenyl ligand.…”
