Synthesis, Spectroscopic, Anticancer, and Antimicrobial Properties of Some Metal(II) Complexes of (Substituted) Nitrophenol Schiff Base

Abstract: The Schiff base, 2-[(2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-4-ylimino)methyl]-5-nitrophenol coordinates to Mn(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pd(II) ions through the phenolic O and imine N atoms. The complexes are characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The metal complexes formed as [ML2]xH2O with exception of the Cu(II) complex which is anhydrous. Spectroscopic data corroborate the adoption of a four-coordinate, tetrahedral geometry for the Mn(II), and Zn(II) complexes, and a four-coordinate, square planar geomet… Show more

“…The electronic spectra of the Pd(II) complexes showed absorption bands in the visible region at 403 and 442 nm for [PdL 1 (H 2 O)Cl] and at 430 and 472 nm for [PdL 2 (H 2 O)Cl] assigned to 1 A 1g → 1 B 1g and 1 A 1g → 1 E 2g transitions, respectively . The electronic transitions are consistent with Pd(II) in a square planar geometry.…”

“…The antioxidant activity of the mixed ligands metal(II) complexes were determined by ferrous ion chelating ability according to published procedure [18]. The stock solution of the metal(II) mixed-ligand complexes was prepared by dissolution of appropriate amounts (1.0 mg) of each complexes in 1.0 mL DMSO.…”

“…Agar diffusion method [18] was employed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activities of the metal complexes. The five laboratory clinical bacteria strains used for the screening consist of two Gram (+ ve) bacteria, viz., Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus and three Gram(-ve) bacteria, namely, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli.…”

“…Coordination chemistry of substituted hydrazone ligands is well known since past few decades due to their structural flexibility, chelating abilities, diverse bonding modes towards transition metal ions and numerous biological applications [1][2][3][4]. The presence of azomethine group in Schiff's bases is known for antifungal [5], antibacterial [6], antitubercular [7], antitumor [8] and anticancer [9] properties. Oxygen containing heterocyclic compound like dehydroacetic acid (DHA) is well known chelating agent with excellent insecticidal and herbicidal activities [10,11].…”
