The addition of potassium graphite (KC 8 ) to a mixture of [η 5 -1,3-(Me 3 C) 2 C 5 H 3 ] 2 UCl 2 (1) and 2,2′-bipyridine forms the uranium bipyridyl metallocene, [η 5 -1,3-(Me 3 C) 2 C 5 H 3 ] 2 U(bipy) (2) in good yield, which is an excellent starting material for small molecule activation. Two major reactivity patterns have been identified for 2: (a) in the presence of a hydrazine derivative (PhNH) 2 , Ph 2 E 2 (E = S and Se), AgF, alkynes, and a variety of heterounsaturated molecules, such as ketazine (Ph 2 CN) 2 , diazenes, pyridine N-oxide, organic azides, and CS 2 , it acts as the synthetic equivalent for theUpon addition of thio-ketone Ph 2 CS; aldehyde p-BrPhCHO; ketones Ph 2 CO, (CH 2 ) 5 CO, and 1-indanone; amidate PhCONH (ptolyl); lactide; seleno-ketone (p-MeOPh) 2 CSe; imine (p-tolyl) 2 CNH; ketazine (PhCHN) 2 ; and nitriles Me 3 CCN, PhCN, andbipy)-(Me 3 CCN)] (31), [η 5 -1,3-(Me 3 C) 2 C 5 H 3 ] 2 U[(C 10 H 7 N 2 )C(Ph)NH] (32), and [η 5 -1,3-(Me 3 C) 2 C 5 H 3 ] 2 U[(C 10 H 7 N 2 )C(C 6 H 11 )NH] (33), respectively. However, from the reaction of 2 with thiazole, the dimeric sulfido complex {[η 5 -1,3-(Me 3 C) 2 C 5 H 3 ]U-[(C 10 H 7 N 2 )C(H)NCHCHS]} 2 (30) is isolated, while the addition of CuI to complex 2 induces a single-electron transfer process to yield the uranium(III) iodide complex [η 5 -1,3-(Me 3 C) 2 C 5 H 3 ] 2 U(I)(bipy) (18).
