Synthetic Aperture Radar Ship Detection Using Haar-Like Features

Abstract: Abstract-The detection of ships at sea is a complex task made more so by adverse weather conditions, lack of night visibility and large areas of concern. Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery with large swaths can provide the needed coverage at a reduced resolution. The development of ship detection methods that can effectively detect ships despite the reduced image resolution is an important area of research. A novel ship detection method is introduced that makes use of a standard Constant False Alarm Rate prescre… Show more

“…The subsequent processed radar images can be used for Earth remote sensing and target detection. Such a system could detect ships, whose automatic identification system (AIS) is turned off, or airliners without a beacon signal when combined with information from other sources [18]. This system can be used for future maritime and aviation security applications, for quick response in disaster monitoring and space debris detection [19].…”

“…Schwegmann et al [21] used this kind of images and applied a low-threshold constant false alarm rate (CFAR) to identify ship candidates, after which they proposed a Haarlike feature extraction. The features obtained in this step were then fed into an adaptable cascade classifier.…”

“…For decades, major achievements in this area focus on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images [1][2][3], which are less influenced by time and weather. However, the resolutions of SAR images are low and the targets lack texture and color features.…”
