System design of the internet of things for residential smart grid

Abstract: Abstract-Internet-of-Things (IoTs) envisions to integrate, coordinate, communicate, and collaborate real-world objects in order to perform daily tasks in a more intelligent and efficient manner. To comprehend this vision, this paper studies the design of a large scale IoT system for smart grid application, which constitutes a large number of home users and has the requirement of fast response time. In particular, we focus on the messaging protocol of a universal IoT home gateway, where our cloud enabled system… Show more

“…Considering both concepts, in [19] the residential energy scheduling optimization problem is solved using two-stage Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) considering the customer preferences and appliances' specifications. Similarly, but applied in a particular case, in [20] a testbed is designed where each housing unit is equipped with sensors, actuators, smart plugs, smart meters, and Unified Home Gateway (UHG). The paper also shows results from implemented applications in Demand Response Management (DRM), energy management, home automation, dynamic pricing, and home security.…”

“…We, therefore, consider a TVWS based NAN in this paper. CR operator can obtain TVWS spectrum information either by contacting the geo-location database or through spectrum sensing 2 . Once the aggregated data reaches the BS, it is further transmitted to the remote servers of the network operator using cable or fiber-optics.…”

“…Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications are the major drivers of smart grid deployment and applications, particularly in residential and commercial buildings. IoT is a broad futuristic vision where a network of "things" such as sensors, objects and nodes is formed to connect and unite physical and digital worlds [1], [2]. The "things" are often called "machines" when they sense, collect and communicate useful data with minimal human intervention.…”

“…Such data packets usually are in many applications for the Internet of Things (IoT) [55]. Actually, the latest version of the Bluetooth specification is focused on applications for IoT and it does not support the park low power mode.…”
