System dynamics model for policy scenarios of organic farming development

Abstract: This paper presents the system dynamics model of organic farming development in order to support decision making. The model seeks answers to strategic questions related to the level of organically utilized area, levels of production and crop selection in a long-term dynamic context. The model will be used for simulation of different policy scenarios for organic farming and their impact on economic and environmental parameters of organic production at an aggregate level. Using the model, several policy scenario… Show more

“…The study outlined in this paper used a System Dynamics Approach (SDA) [32][33][34][35][36][37], which is a methodological approach aimed at understanding the nonlinear behaviour of complex social, managerial, economic, or ecological systems over time. By complex system, what is meant is a system including a plurality of interdependent agents that demonstrate a collective behaviour not coming from the simple sum of the individual elements, but it is the expression of the mutual interaction and relationships of interdependence.…”

“…For example, because of the rising concern with global warming, carbon dioxide absorption of crops is now attracting public attention, which means that new requirements are being proposed for the environmentally friendly production of crops (Korthals, 2008). In this light Rozman et al (2008) and Rozman et al (2010) upgraded the model with the inclusion of organic market development factor. This paper presents a system dynamics model for development of organic agriculture in Slovenia in order to identify key reasons and propose development policy to achieve strategic goals set in the ANEK (Majcen and Jurcan, 2006).…”
