System for Presenting and Creating Smell Effects to Video

Abstract: Olfaction has recently been gaining attention in information and communication technology, as shown by attempts in theaters to screen videos while emitting scents. However, because there is no current infrastructure to communicate and synchronize odor information with visual information, people cannot enjoy this experience at home. Therefore, we have constructed a system of smell videos which could be applied to television (TV), allowing viewers to experience scents while watching their videos. To solve the ab… Show more

“…rose) in a transition to a calmer scene. This could contribute to the research on multimedia synchronisation [47] or combining visual content with olfactory stimulation [59,64]. On the contrary, if a player wants to have a richer gaming experience, content creators could design experiences in such a way that they regulate or modulate the user's state using scents.…”

“…Another application example can be found in the scope of the multisensory cinema (e.g. like in [34]), where a scent accompanies a certain scene of the film, and transitions between the scenes are smooth enough to release a new scent.…”

“…Such devices are often expensive [15] and not flexible in being used in different application scenarios (e.g., lack of adjustment for different distances [30,75]). For these reasons, a range of other prototypes, which have demonstrated themselves efficient for applications like gaming [49], VR [10,23], AR [50], simulated driving [76], multisensory cinema [67], and art [38] have been proposed recently.…”
