System synthesis for multiprocessor embedded applications

Abstract: This paper presents the system synthesis techniques available in S 3 E 2 S, a CAD environment for the specification, simulation, and synthesis of embedded electronic systems that can be modeled as a combination of analog parts, digital hardware, and software. S 3 E 2 S is based on a distributed, object-oriented system model, where objects are initially modeled by their abstract behavior and may be later refined into digital or analog hardware and software. System synthesis is targeted to a multiprocessor platf… Show more

“…Works dealing with metrics in the domain of high-level synthesis [17,18] and hardware software co-design [19][20][21] have been recently proposed. In [17] the metrics provide algorithm properties regarding a hardware implementation; the quantified metrics address the concurrency of arithmetic operations based on uniformed scheduling probabilities and the regularity that measures the repetition rate of a given pattern.…”

“…The main issue is the placement of close functions on the same component in order to optimize communications and resource sharing. An interesting method for processor selection is presented in [20]. Three metrics representing the orientation of functions in terms of control, data transformation and data accesses are computed by counting specific instructions from a processor independent code.…”

“…These metrics focus on a fine grain analysis and are mainly used to guide the design of datapaths, especially to optimize local connection and resource reuse. An interesting method for processor selection is presented in [5]. Three metrics representing the orientation of functions in terms of control, data transformation and data accesses orientation of functions are computed by counting specific instructions from a processor independent code.…”

“…Then a HW/SW partitioning tool is driven by the affinity metrics. Like [5] these metrics are dedicated to HW/SW partitioning, they don't exploit instruction dependencies and address a fixed (C procedures) granularity. Moreover, the locality of data bandwidth is not clearly taken into account.…”
