Systematic assessment of the various controversies, difficulties, and current trends in the reestablishment of lost occlusal planes in edentulous patients

Abstract: Accurate occlusal plane orientation is an essential factor in the fabrication of complete denture prosthesis. Over the years, it has received a number of methodologies by several researchers utilizing various anatomical landmarks however none of them is considered as perfect that could orient ideal occlusal plane. The presented literature review is an attempt to enlighten historical perspectives, pioneer researches, different controversies, difficulties and current trends for re-establishment of lost occlusal … Show more

“…However, all the studied occlusal planes did not show parallelism with basal line of Camper plane. Our results are in accord to recent studies that used different methodologies [22][23][24] and our work reinforce the necessity of demystify some solidified concepts in dental field that has no realistic scientific support.…”

“…The natural position of an occlusal plane is crucial for esthetics, phonetics and lost vertical dimension that can be established by the teeth incisal edges and occlusal surfaces [ 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]. For edentulous patients, placing denture teeth in the natural position enables oral muscles and other surrounding structures to function normally [ 38 , 39 ].…”

“…The most common clinical method for orienting the occlusal plane positions is parallel to the Camper’s plane, which is extended from Ala’s inferior border to the Tragus’s superior border [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. Camper’s plane and Frankfort’s horizontal (FH) plane have been clinically used to establish the occlusal plane for denture fabrication [ 31 ].…”

“…To achieve this goal, one of the key factors in determining the prognosis of totally edentulous patients is the establishment of an occlusion compatible with the movements produced by the stomatognathic system [2]. There is also the need to respect the patient's craniofacial structures and neuromuscular mechanism [3].…”
