Systematic consolidation of input and output buffers in synchronous dataflow specifications

Abstract: -Synchronous Dataflow, a subset of dataflow, is a commonly used model of computation in block diagram DSP programming environments. Because of the limited amount of memory in embedded DSPs, a key problem during software synthesis from SDF specifications is the minimization of the memory used by the target code. We develop a powerful formal technique called buffer merging that attempts to overlay buffers in the SDF graph systematically in order to drastically reduce data buffering requirements. This technique i… Show more

“…Since we can perform this characterization in the context of a restricted subset of dataflow that is not Turing complete, our technique is feasible, practical, and efficient. SDF compilers that make use of the CBP parameter effectively are presented elsewhere [15,16]; we do not address those techniques in this paper. Here, we focus on techniques for determining the CBP parameter.…”

“…Moreover, the compiler can still make use of these enhanced overlaying opportunities through polynomialtime algorithms such as our buffer merging algorithms [16], and our hybrid algorithms that combine CBPbased buffer merging with lifetime-analysis techniques [15].…”
