“…Euphorb. : 6 (2001 Levin (1986b) suggested a close relationship between Heywoodia and Astrocasia, which is confirmed by the molecular evidence. considered Heywoodia as an ancient relict genus because he interpreted traits such as dioecy, the poorly differentiated perianth, the variability of stamen and carpel number, and the small embryo as plesiomorphic.…”

“…This genus was placed with Drypetes and later with genera like Meineckia, but in the molecular analyses of Kathriarachchi et al (2005Kathriarachchi et al ( , 2006 it has been recovered among the basal genera of Phyllantheae. This placement is also compatible with pollen morphology (K€ ohler 1965), leaf morphology (Levin 1986b), and seed coat structure (Tokuoka and Tobe 2001 4: 190 (1975 (Levin 1986a) and pollen morphology (various studies), and the molecular results (Kathriarachchi et al 2005: 127) confirm the close relationship between them but fail to prove that the one is nested in the other.…”

“…Consequently, such venation characteristics are not diagnostic at either the sectional or specific level in Vaccinium. Our observations corroborate the results of other studies which also found that overall qualitative venation pattern is often diagnostic only at the generic level or above, but rarely diagnostic at subgeneric levels (Dickison 1975;Hickey and Wolfe 1975;Levin 1986;Saibaba and Rao 1990;Sarma et al 1992).…”

“…However, a similar taximetric analysis based on character means for each taxon, which the authors argued "smoothed out" environmental and developmental variation in the individuals, produced a dendrogram which agreed with the accepted classification of the genus. In a cladistic analysis of the Phyllanthoideae Levin (1986) verified the systematic value of vegetative characters and concluded that the phylogenies based on cladistic analysis of only foliar characters were consistent with classifications based on traditional taxonomic information. Although vegetative anatomy does provide useful taxonomic information (Levin 1986;Ode11 and Vander Kloet 1991), vegetative characteristics are considered to be secondary taxonomic characters and consequently may be underutilized in taxonomic investigations.…”
