The experimental study on the boiling heat transfer performance and visualization of Al2O3-H2O, SiO2-H2O and Al2O3-SiO2-H2O nanofluids with 0.01% mass concentration were carried out. Alumina and silica nanoparticles with average particle diameters of 30 nm and 50 nm were selected. Al2O3-SiO2-H2O was the mixed aqueous nanofluids with a mass ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 of 1: 1. The results show that the effect of particle size on the boiling heat transfer performance is small. For nanofluids with a particle size of 30 nm, the boiling heat transfer performance of Al2O3-H2O nanofluids is better than that of Al2O3-SiO2-H2O and SiO2-H2O nanofluids under the working pressure of 101 kPa. The critical heat fluxes increased by 7.9% and 22.1% respectively, and the maximum heat transfer coefficients increased by 18.3% and 32.6% respectively. The critical heat flux and the maximum heat transfer coefficient are 162.1 W/cm2 and 7.01W/(m2·K). The working pressure has an important effect on the boiling heat transfer performance of nanofluids. Compared with the boiling heat transfer performance under high pressure conditions, the boiling heat transfer performance of nanofluids is better under low pressure.

At present, there are many applications of nanofluids whose research results are fruitful. Nanofluids can enhance the critical heat flux, but the effect on boiling heat transfer performance still has disagreement. Base liquids with higher viscosity improve the boiling heat transfer performance of nanofluids. When the base liquid is a multicomponent solution, the relative movement between the different solutions enhances the microscopic movement of the nanoparticles due to the different evaporation order during the boiling process, so that the boiling heat transfer performance is enhanced. Compared with the thermal conductivity of the heated surface, the deposition of the low thermal conductivity nanoparticles reduces the heat dissipation rate of the heated surface and improves the wall superheat. Then the enhancement of the boiling heat transfer coefficient should be attributed to the thermal conductivity improvement of base fluid and the bubble disturbance resulted from the nanoparticle’s microscopic motion.

Boiling Heat Transfer Enhancement by Self‐Assembled Graphene/Silver Hybrid Film for the Thermal Management of Concentrated Photovoltaics

Graphene nanosheets have attracted appreciable interest in heat transfer augmentation due to the unique deposition characteristics. The porous morphology of the graphene deposited on the heating surface via self‐assembly is reported to retard the transition boiling significantly. However, less attention has been paid to ameliorate the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of graphene‐dispersed solutions. Herein, silver ions are introduced into graphene nanofluids to ameliorate its HTC. During boiling, graphene nanosheets and silver nanoparticles simultaneously deposit on the heating surface to form a well‐structured porous graphene/silver hybrid coating. The newly formed surface is characterized for surface morphology, wettability, and roughness. The new surface coating enhances the HTC by up to 109% and maintains the retarded critical heat flux of graphene‐only nanofluids. The application of the enhanced boiling heat transfer for the thermal management of concentrated photovoltaics is studied. It is demonstrated that enhanced boiling allows for cogeneration of electricity and heat from concentrated photovoltaics at approximately fourfold increased production rate while maintaining efficient, safe, and reliable operation.
