Systematic review and meta-analysis of maintenance of physical activity behaviour change in cancer survivors

Abstract: Background Physical activity can improve health and wellbeing after cancer and may reduce cancer recurrence and mortality. To achieve such long-term benefits cancer survivors must be habitually active. This review evaluates the effectiveness of interventions in supporting maintenance of physical activity behaviour change among adults diagnosed with cancer and explores which intervention components and contextual features are associated with effectiveness. Methods Releva… Show more

“…However, studies that included telephone professional support also found positive results [49,56]. The amount of supervision needed to make a lasting difference, or the appropriate "dose" for instigating behaviour change is unknown, and a recommended avenue of study [79].…”

“…An update of a 2013 Cochrane review (23 studies, for a total of 1372 patients treated for breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancer) showed that programs that achieved adherence of 75% or greater to exercise guidelines used techniques of goal‐setting, setting graded exercise tasks and instructions on how to exercise . A synthesis of exercise programs that examined exercise maintenance (exercise assessed at least 3 months after program completion) revealed that graded tasks, social support, and action planning were used in studies that sustained significant behavior change …”

“…65 A synthesis of exercise programs that examined exercise maintenance (exercise assessed at least 3 months after program completion) revealed that graded tasks, social support, and action planning were used in studies that sustained significant behavior change. 66 The successful promotion of exercise programming along the cancer continuum requires behavior change for many people affected by cancer. The behavior change is not only at the level of the individual patient, as is commonly assumed, but also at the level of oncology clinicians, family, and community.…”

“…Furthermore, this study showed that breast and colon cancer survivors reported spending 195 (120-380) min/week on moderate-to-vigorous sport and leisure PA and 420 (160-810) min/week on moderate-to-vigorous total PA 4 years after participation in the PACT study. A recent meta-analysis of 19 interventions targeting physical activity in cancer survivors reported that the majority of included studies observed lower levels of moderate-to-vigorous total PA [35]. At 6-month to 5-year follow-up, the minutes per week spent on moderate-to-vigorous total PA varied from 37 to 556 min/week.…”
