Systematic Review of Complications of Prostate Biopsy

Abstract: Preparation for biopsy should include antimicrobial prophylaxis and pain management. Prostate biopsy is frequently associated with minor bleeding and urinary symptoms that usually do not require intervention. Infectious complications can be serious, requiring prompt management and continued work into preventative strategies.

“…Additional cores should be obtained from DRE/TRUS suspicious areas. Oral or intravenous quinolones remain standard prophylactic antibiotics, in spite of the increasing resistance to quinolones, which is associated with a rise in severe and potentially lethal infectious complications [27]. Other biopsy complications include haematospermia (37%), heamaturia lasting more than 1 day (14.5%), rectal bleeding Following an initial negative biopsy, the indications for repeat biopsy are summarised in Table 5.…”

“…3 Because of the additional number of samples there is a significant risk of complications (infection, bleeding, acute urinary retention), anxiety and social-sanitary costs. 4 Recently various biomarkers have been studied to increase the ability to predict PCa diagnosis, especially in patients with persistent suspicion of cancer and a previous negative PB. The most promising biomarkers are PCA3 and [-2]proPSA (p2PSA), along with its derivative, the Prostate Health Index.…”
