Systematic review of light exposure impact on human circadian rhythm

Abstract: Light is necessary for life, and artificial light improves visual performance and safety, but there is an increasing concern of the potential health and environmental impacts of light. Findings from a number of studies suggest that mistimed light exposure disrupts the circadian rhythm in humans, potentially causing further health impacts. However, a variety of methods has been applied in individual experimental studies of light-induced circadian impacts, including definition of light exposure and outcomes. Thu… Show more

“…Dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) is a widely recognized parameter indicating the time at which MLT levels begin to increase in the dark [17], which is used in the diagnosis and follow-up of the results of treatment of sleep disorders. It allows characterization of the circadian rhythm secretion of this hormone based on MLT concentration measurements only in blood, urine or saliva samples collected in dim ambient light [18]. Determination of DLMO is an alternative to actigraphy and measurements of deep body temperature.…”

“…Artificial lighting allows people to extend daytime activities into the night and engage in countercyclical nighttime shift work 6 . Although unnatural lighting provides convenience and increases the pace of social advances, it also brings environmental light pollution, which mediates circadian rhythm disruptions 7 …”

“…Moreover, in mice after 7 days restricted feeding period, measurement of circadian oscillations for serum melatonin did not achieve signi cance (9). Additional factors might also have contributed to high variations in serum melatonin levels such as age and wavelength of light (53,54). On the other hand, serum glucocorticoid concentrations, which is an another parameter exhibiting daily oscillation, have been reported to be increased, reduced or not affected following nighttime light exposure in rodents (13).…”
