Systematic review on ensuring the global food security and covid-19 pandemic resilient food systems: towards accomplishing sustainable development goals targets

Abstract: Covid-19, one of the most critical and widespread global pandemics, has resulted in extraordinary risk corollaries engulfing millions of people's lives and has caused an unprecedented economic downturn while amplifying food insecurity. A systematic review of 132 scientific communications was performed over a 15-year period, using articles from the ScienceDirect and Web of Science databases (2006–2021). In addition, 24 policy briefs, country papers, and publications from the UN, WHO, FAO, and OECD were cited. T… Show more

“…2 ). Globally, the crisis caused by the pandemic disrupted value chains and agri-food systems, resulting in negative economic effects such as the loss of jobs and farmers' livelihoods (Clapp and Moseley 2020 ; Kumareswaran and Yugantha 2022 ). The results also validate one of the hypotheses since both actors had greater impacts on their financial resources (Fig.…”

“…The most recent opportunity for a wake-up call to re-calculate our route from a human-centric to a planet-centric approach was provided by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has widened inequalities, undermined progress on global poverty, and caused a widespread economic and humanitarian crisis [11,12]. The pandemic has revealed the threats and impacts of climate change and other imminent hazards, including antimicrobial resistance (AMR), conflicts, and food insecurity [13][14][15][16][17]. In 2022-2023, Ukraine was the fifth-largest wheat exporter worldwide.…”

“…As a result, human food security is directly connected to climactic conditions and the global food supply, with people living in geographically vulnerable areas (i.e., rural, remote, coastal or northern arctic regions) [16][17][18] and those whose livelihoods are closely connected to the land (i.e., farmers, Indigenous communities) experiencing the greatest risks to their food security [9,14,19,20]. The Coronavirus pandemic reminded the world of the global interconnectedness of its food supply [21], as it affected all populations -and not only those previously deemed to be living in areas geographically vulnerable to adverse climate change events [22][23][24]. Increasing frequency of extreme weather events [24]also directly affects mental health [21,22], with the term 'solastalgia' coined to refer to the specific mental distress caused by environmental degradation and climate change [25].…”

Increasing frequency of extreme weather events [24]also directly affects mental health [21,22], with the term 'solastalgia' coined to refer to the specific mental distress caused by environmental degradation and climate change [25]. Solastalgia has become increasingly prevalent in regions experiencing adverse weather events, especially where there is a lack of support or dedicated adaptation strategies [8].…”
