On February 6, 2023, at 04:17 and 13:24 Turkish time, with the epicenter in Pazarcık and Elbistan districts of Kahramanmaraş, with Mw7.7 (depth of focus = 8.6 km) and Mw7.6 (depth of focus = 7 km), two earthquakes occurred. More than 33,000 aftershocks of up to 6.7 Mw occurred after the earthquake. The earthquakes in question caused great destruction in our country and 11 provinces in Syria. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the affected areas in Turkey and Syria are home to approximately 23 million people, including 1.4 million children. As a result of the earthquakes, according to official figures, at least 50 thousand 783 people in Turkey and at least 8 thousand 476 people in Syria lost their lives, and more than 122 thousand people were injured. In addition, more than half a million buildings were damaged, including homes, hospitals, schools, and government buildings, and close to two million people were forced to move to other cities because of the massive destruction of their homes, communications, and energy infrastructure. According to official records, Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes have caused the greatest loss of life and material in the history of the Republic of Turkey . On the other hand, although earthquakes occur frequently because of Turkey's location on an active seismic belt, unplanned urbanization, structurally weak buildings, and inadequate earthquake education and preparation still contribute to high earthquake-related death and disability rates. The ancient cities of our country were destroyed; the city where I was born and raised was destroyed; and we were destroyed.
